"I Think I Love My Wife"
Starring: Chris Rock, Kerry Washington, Gina Torres and Eliza Coupe
[R]

It's a romantic comedy, but probably not a date movie, unless you like making your wife or girlfriend suspicious.

It's funny, it's original (in a way) and it's a great way to kill your time. But Chris takes us on an adventure through his mind with observations on the state of marriage.

Though formula-like in many ways, with Chris staying with his wife and passing on an opportunity at a moment most men couldn't think straight...it's a humorous look at the state of marriage.

Yes, this is an off the wall recomendation, but to really enjoy it...go by yourself guys, or the women in our lives will start getting more suspicious than they already are.

"Premonition"
Starring: Sandra Bullock, Julian McMahon and Nia Long
[PG-13]

I saw that this movie was panned by some critics, but personally thought this was interesting. Could be because I have a crush on Sandra Bullock, could be because the story kept me going until the end.

The photography, the direction and acting were all good, really good, though there were some slow spots and by the end of the movie, you knew EXACTLY what was going to happen. This is where this otherwise really good story took a bad turn (pun intended).

Because of the wrong turn or easy to figure out ending, I'd call this an okay movie but recommend you wait until this come out on DvD or even better, on free TV.

"Reign Over Me"
Starring: Adam Sandler, Don Cheadle and Jada Pinkett Smith
[R]

There are more people in this unique film, but it is the most intimate film I have seen between two men in my life, so I have to concentrate on them.

I didn't think Adam Sandler could pull off a genuinely serious, heartfelt, tragic part like this. I don't usually like it when a comedian tries serious...yet something has happened to Adam Sandler. Somehow, between juvenile parts that were wasting his talent...he became a really good actor!

The relationship between the two men, one destroyed by the tragedy of 9-11, the other simmering in discontent rescues both of them. This film is touching, cool, interesting and sad, yet fun at the same time.

This is the perfect film to take a date to. You will BOTH enjoy it and all I can say is, bravo to the cast and crew of this marvelous movie experience.

"Wild Hogs"
Starring: Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, William H. Macy and Ray Liotta
[PG-13]

Roadtrip movie that starts off with something I can relate to, guys aging a little less gracefully than we wished it would happen

Beautiful scenery, bikes and talented artists makes it hard for this film to miss. Good writing and funny situations keeps the audience entertained, and a love interest will keep the date happy!

Ray Liotta is a very believeable bad guy who brings in a level of tension...and everything is going great until the guys settle in at the next town where things start getting predictable, slow and the writers got tired.

I liked this movie until near the end, so I won't say not to see it...I'd just give my wait for it to go to DvD or go on free TV recommendation.

"A. I. (Artificial Intelligence)"
Starring: Haley Joel Osment, Jude Law and Frances O'Connor
[PG-13]

This is a good story with great special effects...but there are points where it drags and there are places with very inappropriate content for kids. I write that, not as a prude, but even with the rating, somehow you see a kid like Haley Joel Osment on Leno or in the ads and you can't help but think this is a film I should take my kid to.

The picture is flawed from the beginning, when the writer wants his audience to believe that a family can accept or even contemplate accepting a robot to replace their child. When the child recovers...naturally he is the evil one...so evil that he destroys everything! Another rude, boorish and prejudiced flaw in this picture arises as an adult robot is escorting Haley Joel Osment through a red-light district of whore houses only to find a Catholic chapel with the only point being to ridicule Mary, the Mother of Jesus and the Catholics who are foolish enough to have faith and to pray. All this, while it is 'noble' to pray to a statue of a fairy, and all this while it's okay to believe in machines with 'feelings' and futuristic aliens who can bring people back to life (although they are limited to one day).

So, once again...Hollywood proves the concept that they can take a good story, throw millions of dollars at it and build incredible effects into it...yet viewing it all through a narrow prism and blinded by there own bigotry and religious prejudice and ruin your movie going experience! Obviously, I would say not to go see this, wait for it on cable, maybe tape or dvd, or better yet...forget this multi-million dollar project all together!

"A Knight's Tale"
Starring: Heath Ledger, Mark Addy and Rufus Sewell
[PG-13]

The action packed story of jousting and knighthood and, well...the days when men were men, women were women...and nudity, sex, violence and rock and roll were good things! Don't worry though, you can still bring the women and children as there is a sweet kind of romance, the sex is implied as in older films our parents used to watch and the violence is almost all heroic and jousting related. I liked the music so much that I even bought the CD (I rarely indulge like that).

Flaws? Sure there are some, but I am a sucker for movies with Capra (It's a Wonderful Life) like 'feel-good moments' and stories with morals about being yourself and still coming out ahead. I make no apologies for that...and this is that kind of a film, bringing the days of yore and the characters of that time to life. I would have written it differntly and they took some shortcuts in a plot which helped save the good knight's neck...but hey, as we used to say on the studio lots and locations about the multi-million dollar productions I worked on: "Relax, it's only a movie!" ...And as such, '"A Knight's Tale" is amusing and entertaining!

"Along Came A Spider"
Starring: Morgan Freeman, Monica Potter, Michael Wincott and Mika Boorem
[R]

I am a former law enforcement officer, so crime-drama genre films can be a little hard to watch without finding errors left and right. I am a former federal agent, so throw a special agent into the mix and I usually find myself too engrossed in the inaccuracies to follow a plot. Yet Morgan Freeman is such a consummate actor, Monica Potter so convincing and the writer has spun such a silken web of intrigue that I found myself watching a story instead of thinking about my training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, Georgia!

The writing was good, the story had enough depth and the actors were believable...even the female Secret Service agent who drew my sympathy. Monica Potter had to walk a fine line which could easily had been too sugary or too butch which would have drawn attention to the technical errors or mistakes so often glaring in other films because of weak acting. I once watched Morgan Freeman play a pimp on some film that happened to be on TV and he always surprises me in how believable he is. His ability to draw in the audience and make you forget that you are watching a 'movie' makes everything he is in an experience. Mika Boorem was perfect as the likeable kid/victim (amazing for her age!) 'Along Came A Spider' is a very interesting story with an excellent cast and some interesting developments in the story plot.

"America's Sweethearts"
Starring: Julia Roberts, John Cusack, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Billy Crystal
[PG-13]

I like movies, I love movies...and the stars in this film are usually some of my favorites but this supposed 'inside look' into the Hollywood lifestyle is mainly a disappointing, slow and dull picture at best.

As I sit here, it's taken me a week to write this review because I hate writing such a poor review but I have to be honest and I owe you our 'viewers' at least that much. These stars are too old for these parts, the writing was actually boring and although I understand even the greats sometimes do things just for the money, they too should feel a little debt to their public as well. Shame on these stars for taking our money as audiences for 'product' like this. A movie like 'American Sweethearts' saddens me, I expect more from all the people involved in this movie and 'no,' I would not recommend this lackluster, boring attempt at comedy.

"Amores Perros"
[R]

Not that long ago...someone mentioned that onlinetheater is 'a little parochial' in our approach to entertainment. I value her judgement as she's one of the smartest people I know, so when I saw a Spanish film playing near my house...I bought a ticket and took a seat to try to broaden our appeal (after-all, we are available in Spanish, German and French).

WOW! Was I glad that I did! This wasn't as original as it was good...only because fans of Quentin Tarantino will recognise his editing and story telling technique. But, even straining to try to understand without looking at the subtitles this is an awesome tale of the difficulties of life and love and their consequences in the poorest and richer segments of Mexican society. It's amazing sometimes how little we Americans seem to know about our southern neighbor. This is a film that illustrates that point as well as demonstrating how quicky one's life can change (literally in the blink of an eye, we see a beautiful and successful model lose everything). If you speak Spanish YES go see this, if you don't speak Spanish...still go, and read the subtitles.

"Angel Eyes"
Starring: Jennifer Lopez, James Caviezel and Terrence Howard
[R]

This is a film that makes you wonder why you ever moved from Chicago in the first place. Friendly people, helpful, caring cops, great scenery...okay, I remember the people, the police are pretty awesome (they picked me up when I ran away as a little boy, and really, really are terrific)...but the swimming hole, the hill by a cemetery, Jennifer Lopez? Yeah, I think I remember a rock quarry near my old high school (Thornwood) in a suburb and there was Olivia, Nina, Maria, Rosa and Graciela at W.K. Sullivan and Bowen...okay, there really are beautiful Latin women there too! Why did I move?

Memories and joking aside, one flaw killed me...cops ALWAYS eating and drinking. I mean in this movie restaurants and bars must be the safest places in Chicago, followed closely by only the closest of neighbors. Now, beyond that, these film makers must be congratulated on another score...without giving anything away, they do not make the issue of abuse look simple...no, they show ramifications that go so far beyond what is politically correct these days that it makes you (the audience) think about a subject that is only one of many elements. Jennifer Lopez's character has many facets and this is a good and interesting film.

"Bedazzled"
Starring: Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley
[PG]

This modern day Faustian tale with Brendan Fraser as the human silly enough to bargain his soul with a sexy and alluring Elizabeth Hurley as a female version of the devil who owns a nightclub and drives a sporty Lamborghini 'Diablo' is entertaining indeed. Don't look for it to get an Oscar or anything like that, but for the cost of a ticket, it will make you laugh and that was certainly what I needed on the day that I went to see it.

"Blow"
Starring: Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz
[R]

Based on a true story, 'Blow' might have been better edited (only to keep the pace up)... but Johnny Depp captures the role of a guy who stumbles into the drug racket magnificently! As the story plays out, it's of interest to those of us old enough to remember the exciting yet turbulant 70's as cocaine EXPLODED into the American conciousness. More than that though...you watch and learn as a not-so-bad guy, through trial and error, ambition and greed, uses the drug trade to build a life for himself. That 'life' then, spins so far out of control, that try as he might, he cannot straighten things out.

The beautiful, sexy and vivacious Penelope Cruz spins her role, from likeable and seductive to crazed shrew, showing a range I never imagined she possesed! The story goes from something you think be mildly entertaining to a deeper story as Cruz and Depp's characters crash and burn, destroying the unique love a father and daughter share. The theater I viewed this movie in was crowded with middle-aged, guys commenting and whispering until the end when the writer, director and Depp conspire a final blow (no pun intended) to an absolutely stunned and silent audience. Bravo!

'Blow' will probably make you think about our current drug policy and the laws that incarcerate so many people unnecessarily (and I say that as someone who does NOT do drugs). 'Blow' might make you think about the person you love, and wonder if they'd be there for you no matter what. 'Blow' might make your eyes water when you think about your own daughter (as it did mine). But if you have any depth to your soul, any room in your heart, any emphathy for another human being...'Blow' will probably touch you. Do I recommend you see this movie? YES! YES! YES! A resounding yes!

"Bridget Jones's Diary"
Starring: Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth
[R]

Renee Zellweger co-starred in Jerry Maguire, a film I also appeared in (although to be honest, we never met - remember, I was but an extra...so I didn't always meet everyone). There, that's my disclaimer...yet this was an interesting if sentimental 'chick-flick' genre film which made this Irish boy somehow feel nostalgic about Christmas in England. Yikes! That's a big deal indeed! Do they really have girls running through the streets in their underwear as a yuletide tradition?

The English cast is superb and cute and funny...accurately portraying Europeans as I remember from what I recall while I lived in Germany and travelled the continent. The formula, though routine (girl meets boy, girl falls for boy, girl loses boy, girl...well, no need to spoil it for you), is one of those where you like the character enough to care and to hope things work out for her (as Renee did with Jerry Maguire as well). Okay, so this is a good 'chick-flick' and date movie...something I'd 'mildly' recommend.

"Bringing Down the House"
Starring: Steve Martin and Queen Latifah
[PG-13]

This story about an uptight tax attorney and an framed convicted felon girl who meet over the Internet (in a chat room) starts off innocently enough, developes a story-line and characters...follows all the rules and comes up with a few good laughs as well as some lessons for people still trapped by their own racism.

Yes, this could have been funnier, but as an unapologetic fan of Steve Martin, his antics do still carry the weight of this story and made me laugh. Queen Latifah carries her own and brings some laughs as well...as well as some unexpected tenderness to the screen.

But, as far as recommending this love story to a friend (you), I think it was a little slow. This will be a good video to rent when it comes out and pop some pop corn at home on a cold and rainy night. Otherwise, I think it falls a little short for the price of taking your date, or family to the movies.

"Castaway"
Starring: Tom Hanks
[PG-13]

Okay, when I was younger I used to watch 'Bosom Buddies' and I was convinced Tom Hanks was one of the funniest guys on T.V. Then he starred in several movies and won high acclaim in the dramatic world. Now, with 'Castaway' I just have to ask if he couldn't make doing the laundry interesting to watch.

His Fedex job before the disaster that leaves him washed ashore on a beautiful island is something he made interesting, his ordeals are convincing and when he talks to a volleyball that becomes his companion...it doesn't look nuts, it looks like something you might do to stay sane. This is just a good movie and worth the price of admission and popcorn and soda.

"Charlie's Angels"
Starring: Bill Murray, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Lui
[PG-13]

To be honest, I went into the theater expecting to hate this remake of the former TV series of the same name. I arrived a little late, but within five minutes or so, I have to admit, they had me laughing! The music wasn't bad either. I can't say that the plot was great, I can't say the situations were believable, but for simple entertainment...this is a good show. The 'Soul Train' scene, Lucy Lui cooking a multi-coarse meal, and Matt LeBlanc poking fun at himself and the over the top bad guys were amusing.

"Crocodile Dundee In Los Angeles"
Starring: Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski
[PG]

Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski are a charming couple in their own right and yes, there are a couple of funny moments...but, unfortunately there isn't anything really new or exciting in this re-make. The best that I heard reported was that this was a film you could take your children to. I would not agree because of the language. As you know if you've read all the poems and stories on this site, I am not a prude or puritan by any measure...but, I was uncomfortable when the gang-bangers attempt to mug Dundee (even he says in the film, something like: 'Gees, I get mugged all the time...'), when the gangbangers call him their 'bitch.' I hardly think that's language we want our kids to pick-up.

"Down To Earth"
Starring: Chris Rock
[R]

Can you imagine Hollywood stealing an old idea that's been done more than once with the ONLY new spin being that we cast a brilliant black comedian in and yet they charge the same to see this movie as something a little fresher and newer? Can you remember a movie called 'Heaven Can Wait' with Warren Beatty that was a rip off of a movie done back in the thirties or forties?

Okay, so now you know what 'Down to Earth' is...and the insatiable need for Chris Rock to swear his way through dialogue that doesn't really need it confuses my recommendation. It's a cute story, Chris Rock is brilliant and funny and yet...'Down to Earth' fails on so many levels, well...if you're bored, if you're not with a child, if you have an extra few bucks to throw away...yes, go see this movie. On the other hand, if there is ANYTHING ELSE that you could be doing, any other movie playing, go do it, see it and avoid this until it's on tv.

"Dracula 2000"
[R]

This Wes Craven retelling of an ancient tale starts off so slow that I almost walked out about fifteen minutes after it started, about a half an hour into the movie...I decided to write a bad review. Then something strange happened! The story came back from the dead and brought the audience back to life! I'm serious, Dracula 2000 actually wasn't that bad and the story woven to explain more of what seems to be a historic perspective of the Dracula story got interesting.

Yes, I would recommend this movie to my friends and to you as well.

"Enemy at the Gates"
Starring: Joseph Fiennes, Jude Law, Rachel Weisz, Bob Hoskins and Ed Harris
[R]

This World War II epic takes its audience right into the midst of the fighting and the war in Stalingrad during what arguably were the worst of days for the now defunct Soviet Union. On the one level it was riveting and the battle scenes extremely well done...you see, you feel, you experience the blood, guts and horror of war! That and the performances of Bob Hoskins (as Kruschev) and Ed Harris (as a German Army sniper) are top notch and the absolute best parts of the movie.

The worst that this picture has to offer is the nagging, almost propaganda-like effort on behalf of a failed ideology and what is really just another evil empire on a par with the Nazi horrors they are fighting. I found it difficult to 'believe' that there was 'nobility' on either side and there was no-one who really stood out as a 'good guy.' The story tries to tell us about a man who by fate, impresses a political/propaganda officer only to grow into the role of 'hero' for real. But, it lacks there by any thought of decency in his final act...where the 'hero' criminally kills his nemesis rather than take him prisoner as required by any civilized peoples...except the barbaric communists who allegedly still honor this man as a hero in some museum in Russia.

I am saddened that American theaters would show this propaganda effort and try to pass it off as entertainment. No, I would NOT recommend this to friends.

"Evolution"
Starring: David Duchovny, Julianne Moore, Orlando Jones and Seann William Scott
[PG-13]

Funny, interesting....you know you didn't REALLY learn anything, but you feel like you did! David Duchovny really can laugh at himself and can play this humorous part, Julianne Moore somehow came out of the thriller 'Hannibal' and fell into this humorous story...and Orlando Jones pops out of those great 7Up commercials...I don't even pretend to know how they pulled this cast together, but it worked!

'Evolution' was better and funnier than I expected and a pleasure to watch. If you want to relax and enjoy a film, I heartily recommend this story about an alien rock that falls to earth, bringing a new, evolving kind of life to us and the insanity that might create!

"Finding Forrester"
Starring: Sean Connery
[PG-13]

I'm not too sure what to tell you about 'Finding Forrester' because I must confess a bias. I grew up when Sean Connery was THE James Bond and as every boy my age, I deeply admired him as a hero. That said, I've lived a lifetime with Sean Connery in movies. How could you not feel he was a 'friend?' As an Irishman, how could you not admire this Scottish 'cousin' fighting for Scotland's independence yet still getting 'knighted' by the Queen of England, herself? Then, as writer who has been in his own seclusion for a while...for this same man to portray a writer as Forrester, well, naturally I am prejudiced.

Okay, that was my disclaimer...but really, GO SEE THIS MOVIE! There's not much in the way of spectacular effects, violence and sex...but you know what? This is a good and moving story about Forrester and an inner-city youth who he helps to become a better writer himself. Maybe this isn't the kind of review that you're used to, but Connery carries the day and shows his usually interesting performance. I think you'll like it on the big screen or on cable/video/dvd.

"Flight Plan"
Starring: Jodie Foster, Peter Sarsgaard, and Sean Bean
[PG-13]

Now this is an interesting movie that you might just miss without thinking it worth the ticket, and you'd be wrong!

The story starts simple enough, a grieving widow and her daughter, escorting her husband's body back to the states after an accident abroad. Yeah, yeah, yeah...the mother awakens after a brief nap only to find she lost her daughter. It's a plane for God's sake, she'll find her, right?

No, no, no my friends, it's deeper, it's more complicated. What's more, it's believeable and surprising with twists and turns, you catch yourself saying oh, I get it...only to be surprised by another twist and turn to your own amazement!

...And I say this, not necessarily being a Jody Foster fan. But she's good and the story is GREAT! I did not expect to be recommending this film, but I must because this is the kind of film that makes you think and entertains and that you'll remember for a long time to come. Yes, I recommend you go see Flight Plan!

"Fun With Dick and Jane"
Starring: Jim Carrey and Téa Leoni
[PG-13]

Lately, I’m not sure I’ve been a big fan of Jim Carrey, but I thought I take in his latest movie and hope that he returned to his roots of just being funny…

It’s not his greatest effort, but I think it’s better than he’s been. Téa Leoni also turns in a good performance as they portray a couple pushed to the breaking point when Carrey’s character is set-up as one of the fall guys in an Enron like situation (the top guy gets rich stealing everything from the company and workers, everyone else loses everything).

This is not a GREAT movie it’s fun though, and to be honest, it’s on the border of seeing in the theater and seeing at home on DvD or VHS.

"Austin Powers in Goldmember"
Starring: Mike Myers, Beyonce Knowles and Heather Graham
[PG-13]

I believe I mentioned somewhere before that I have met and worked with Mike Myers who is a great guy, fantastically funny and really decent...even with the likes of a mere 'extra' like I was back in the days of "Wayne's World II." Not a big deal to many, but he joked around with a few of us on the set and that really endeared him to me.

That said...this was a ridiculously silly film, a total waste of an adult's time...and...dare I say it? FUNNY! This was good clean fun, although the sexiness of Beyonce jumped off the screen and into any man's lap, just enough to tease, yet kept it at a level so that fathers needn't feel funny about bringing the kids.

Okay, Dirty old b*st*rd is a little much...yet hilarious as always. Dr. Evil is wickedly funny. Silly, ridiculous, yes! But fun and you'll be laughing on your way out of the theater

"Hannibal"
Starring: Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore
[R]

You put together a film with Anthony Hopkins acting genius and Julianne Moore's beauty and you must have a film that you can't take your eyes off the screen, right? You're a sophisticated viewer, even a gore fan...and you love special effects, so you think. I have to tell you, this is a good film, but GOD...oh my God...I swear, this big, burley Irishman had to hold my hands over my eyes and shriek like a little girl, TWICE!!!

Eat in advance of seeing 'Hannibal' because, yes my friend, this is everything everyone has told you it is. It's still one great experience, but probably not for the squeamish or vegetarians among us. I liked it for the most part, I guess I'd compare it to a roller coaster ride, a scary roller coaster ride. Not for children, but the teenagers are probably sneaking in to see this riveting thriller.

"Heartbreakers"
Starring: Sigourney Weaver, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ray Liotta and Gene Hackman
[PG 13]

This was a fun movie, accentuated by Jennifer Love Hewitt in flattering, short, tight wonderful dresses. Okay, even as a middle aged man, I did notice some flaws... expecting more from Gene Hackman and Ray Liotta, but Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer really carried this movie with a touch of mother-daughter rivalry and great sense of comedic talent.

Jennifer is a wonderful person inside as she is outside. Several years ago I worked on the set of 'Party of Five' and she had to wait in a doorway with me for maybe two hours as we did some minor scenes (remember, I was there ONLY an extra) and she must have chatted with me the whole time...just as a sweet kid. With that personality and the talent she has exhibited thus far...one day, she may indeed become the Audrey Hepburn of our time, a role she also played so very well.

"Joe Dirt"
Starring: David Spade
[PG-13]

I went to see Joe Dirt reluctantly...I mean so much has been said that was so bad about this film. Yet sometimes you have to go see something like that to see if it's really THAT bad...I guess that's part of why I went. Yeah, yes, that must be it. Oh and my shoelaces were untied so I tripped into the theater!

All that said, a lot of people who write about and talk about movies don't seem to like movies or actors or something. I love both, so what can I say, I laughed! David Spade and his co-stars will not win an Academy Award for this, but it was funny, it was entertaining, it was okay. Yes, I'd say go see 'Joe Dirt' if you're looking for a simple and funny film, just don't tell anyone or they might call you a red-neck!

"Jurassic Park III"
Starring: Sam Neil, William H. Macy and Tea Leoni
[PG-13]

Roaring great special effects that will make the most seasoned Jurassic Park fan jump out of their seats when the dinosaurs attack! This is a third sequel and yes, we all know what to expect, so it's hard to say much about the story itself...yet I enjoyed the film.

Before I give my recommendation, a disclaimer: 'I was in "The Lost World (the last 'Jurassic Park' film)" as the security guard on the left, behind the old man on the dock, just before the ship crashed! That said, I would send a friend to go see this and I do recommend it to people who aren't tired of the Jurassic Park series...yet I understand people who are saying they had enough, and I have to warn you...the end of this film could easily become the opening of Jurassic Park IV.

"Just Friends"
Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Amy Smart, Anna Faris, Chris Klein, and Ty Olsson
[PG-13]

Asking the age old question about guys who become ?friends? to a girl they adore?the film starts off with a awkwardly fat and nice boy named Chris, extremely likeable on the night of his graduation. Infatuated with a popular and gorgeous cheerleader?this is the night he?s going to reveal how he really feels about his best friend Amy. Things go cruelly awry and Chris departs into the darkness, humiliated and vowing that they see, they?ll all see, he?ll be successful. Cut to present day Los Angeles where a trim and grown-up Chris is now a wealthy music industry executive.

Traveling with an untalented but very famous ?it? girl, who his boss wants to cut an album?their airplane has a problem forcing them to land in New Jersey, amazingly enough near Chris? home town. In a night of reunions that stretches into several days, Chris? character is shallow, rude?and yet somehow, still likeable. Scenes between him and his rival for Amy as well as with his ?brother? are hilarious. There are moments of laugh out loud humor. It?s okay.

Okay?doesn?t warrant running out to the theaters right now though. Maybe at the dollar movies, maybe when it comes out on video or DvD. Ryan Reynolds is always enjoyable and Anna Faris is terrific in her over the top performance as a no talent singer. Everyone turned in a good performance, but the language could have been toned down a little (vulgarities and swearing pepper the script?so don?t take the kids) and would have probably made the film more enjoyable. I know that sounds a wee bit conservative, but I like to take the kids with me and language like this takes so much away from sharing a movie with them.

All-in-all though, I liked this movie.

"Just Like Heaven"
Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Mark Ruffalo, Jon Heder and Donal Logue
[PG-13]

At first sight, looks like boy is supposed to meet girl, girl dies, but fate won't take no for an answer and so, boy meets girl...

But wait, there's a twist, the story is just slighlty more complicated (though you won't know until close to the end of the picture, and I won't spoil the twist for you|).

First, for my own disclosure; I do NOT know Reese Witherspoon, though I did once meet a good friend of hers on a movie set (forgot which one). And, another confession, I am a desperate, Frank Capra kind-of sentimental slob. I really enjoyed this movie, it made me laugh, smile and brough a brief tear to my eyes. The story is cute, clean and just nice. Probably a good 'date movie' with everyone leaving the theater feeling good. And yes, I think you could take the kids.

"Legally Blonde"
Starring: Reese Witherspoon
[PG-13]

This is a funny, okay...mindless, but still funny summer film for someone with some time to kill. If you don't care about reality or a serious story...this is an okay ride to just kill some time and have some chuckles. Reese Witherspoon is funny and charming even though she is playing an unrealistic role about a very shallow college girl struggling to save a failed love.

"Little Nicky"
Starring: Adam Sandler, Harvey Keitel, and Rodney Dangerfield
[PG-13]

Not a big Adam Sandler fan here, but they had a great hell and over-all, this was indeed pretty funny. The film was amusing but I found Sandler's slurred speech and the cute but irratating 'valley-girl' type angels an unecessary distraction. The effects for hell showed a lot of thought and creativity, but heaven was as unexciting as possible.

In a way, I would recommend this, but only as mindless entertainment to make you laugh while killing some time.

"Meet the Parents"
Starring: Ben Stiller and Robert DeNiro
[PG-13]

The plot is familiar...the terror of meeting the prospective in-laws, but the performances, timing and crisp writing bring this film to life! I worked with or maybe I should say for Mr Stiller in 'The Cable Guy' which he directed...again only as an 'extra' and I am not even sure you can see me in any of the scenes, but he is a consumate professional and this shows in his recent performance here. He tries to get into the good graces of his perspective father-in-law...a difficult and overbearing man played by DeNiro, and everything goes horribly yet hilariously wrong.

To sum this film up in one word: 'funny.' Enjoy this one with a friend...it's a good movie'

"Memento"
Starring: Guy Pearce, Carrie-Ann Moss and Joe Pantoliano
[R]

An exciting thriller about a man with a memory disorder chasing his wife's killer, the problem (for him) is that he tells everyone he meets about this problem which leads to his 'friends' taking advantage of him. This premise could be exciting all on its own...but I found the editing a little bothersome as this film seems to run on a continual rewind. At least that was the problem at first. Eventually, you start to get used to this madness and it helps you (as the movie goer) relate to this former insurance investigator's plight.

The technique is something that reminded me of an old Humphrey Bogart movie in which you ARE the character. You watch, but you're confused, you walk in not caring, but leave with an experience. ...And, all of this was done with what was an interesting story and the intertwined lives of these three main characters! Guy Pearce is great in this story, yet Joe Pantoliano plays his part masterfully and together, they carry the viewer through an adventure that Carrie-Ann Moss acting as an intelligent and conniving woman with her own ideas and plans for the character driven plot. The director (together with this cast and the writer) created a truly unique and original film that I would recommend to my friends

"Memoirs of a Geisha"
Starring: Suzuka Ohgo, Togo Igawa, Mako, Samantha Futerman and Elizabeth Sung
[PG-13]

A movie starts and you expect to be entertained, but this story brought up certain expectations and lo and behold, it exceeded them in every way.

How? It’s scenery is breathtaking, cinematography impeccable, but what really amazed me…there’s an original and unique story in this film as well! I mean something to loose yourself in and learn from and what was that first point? Oh, yeah….to be entertained by!

I do not just recommend this Asian film, I actually endorse this movie and think anyone who enjoys film should watch this movie at least once. It’s terrific!

"Men of Honor"
Starring: Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Robert DeNiro
[R]

If you want to be inspired, this is the movie to see! I have to tell you that I worked with Cuba Gooding, Jr. in 'Jerry Maguire' 'Outbreak' and a few other films (remember, I was only an extra...) and he is sincerely one of the nicest people you will ever meet. In this movie about the first black Navy diver, Gooding and DeNiro both put in great performances.

White, brown, black or purple this story surpasses the color line and just makes you want this poor young man to succeed as he leaves his sharecropper mother and father behind with a deeply instilled desire to be the best at what he has chosen as his future. Based on a true story, I don't think there was anyone in the theater that wasn't shocked at the hardships this man had to overcome and who didn't cheer for him. DeNiro captures the role of a hard core NCO who fights his own demons, yet in seeing this determination and commitment comes to help and stand for...well, in a word: 'honor.'

"Moulin Rouge"
Starring: Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor
[PG-13]

The story hit a chord with me, starting off with an Argentinian man falling through a roof, helping to move the film from an incredible begining into the story and introducing the main character to Paris and the night life of the city of lights...much as an Argentinian man once fell into my own life and introduced me to Paris and the night life around the actual Moulin Rouge and the area surrounding it called 'Pig Allee.' The writer and/or producer must have been in love with 'The Sound of Music' because many familiar moments occur...this time trying to bring the audience deeper in a multi-layered visually arresting film with some very unique cinemotography.

Audibly, 'Moulin Rouge' is a little overpowering as the mostly familiar songs flood the senses bringing memories and experiences to each and every audience member, making this a different film experience for everyone. I am serious...the first movie I have seen in a long time where the audience laughs together and actually applauded together! There is a point in the story where they use the words from Madonna's "Like A Virgin" with the evil Duke...and it's hilarious.

Obviously, I had a good time (and this was after seeing two mediocre films, so I wasn't expecting much). I really do recommend this film, it was a really good movie-going experience.

"One Night At McCool's"
Starring: Liv Tyler, Matt Dillon, Michael Douglas and John Goodman
[R]

In one of the first scenes in this film, a Roman Catholic priest is looking for a cup or glass to pour some liquor into. The priest finds a chalice and in the most degrading way possible, he throws out (of the chalice) the communion wafers. I am a Catholic, so maybe I am overly sensitive to this, but I believe I would be repulsed by any film that denigrates any sacred object people hold as holy and sacred as we hold the bread and wine with which we gather to celebrate the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for all of us..

After that shock to my system, an interesting story develops as a beautiful woman enters the lives of four other men. Unfortunately, religious bigotry surfaces again and again as the producers seem to want to poke our eyes with the red hot poker of religious intolerance...the priest coming in and out of the story, drinking in the church from the sacred chalice and prodding his confessor, John Goodman to reveal the more salacious details of his sexual escapade with this woman (Liv Tyler). It's too bad that this complicated and interesting story had to be a propaganda tool for such hatred of Catholics...it could have been a good story. If you are a Catholic, if you are a Christian or if you just support freedom of religion and religious tolerance...I recommend you NOT see this piece of anti-Christian 'art.'

"Pay It Forward"
Starring: Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt and Haley Joel Osment
[PG-13]

Here I have to plea a certain bias. I have worked with Helen Hunt on her old series ('Mad About You') and a movie ('Good As It Gets'), and found her friendly and charming and nervous about delivering a good performance (she held on to the script longer than anyone else and concentrated harder...) I am impressed by her. Kevin Spacey is just an awesome talent and although I have only seen Haley Joel Osment in 'Sixth Sense,' I believe that he is an actor we will be entertained by for years to come.

That said...this story about a teacher who inspires his student to start something of a trend whereby total strangers start doing favors for each-other, hence 'pay it forward,' has so many good sentiments, ideas and performances I have only one complaint. That being, why does Hollywood feel this 'need' to always portray families as broken and the father (as in this story) as some drunken brute? I enjoyed most of this movie; I really did, but the scenes with this boy talking to his teacher about the father, the teacher talking with the mother about his own brutish dad (again, is there any other kind in Hollywood?) and the father returning only to argue, fight, threaten and leave again...made me feel uncomfortable. Over all, this is a good film, I just regret that the fathers of the world had to take it on the chin...again.

"Pearl Harbor"
Starring: Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett, Kate Beckinsale, and Cuba Gooding, Jr.
[PG-13]

First, I was surprised by the lack of an audience in the local theater...6:30 and it was practically empty for a 7:00 showing, even by 6:45, the seats were mostly open and available. With all the interviews, all the ads and all the hype, I just expected throngs and crowds and I must confess it was a nice surprise.

I heard there were some bad reviews, but about a half an hour into the movie...I thought the character development was really good. I was impressed if not amused at the craft of the director (Michael Bay), as he made you like, know and even care about the lead character (Affleck). About an hour into the movie, I started to wonder if the director got too carried away in trying to make a 'chick flick.' About an hour and fifteen minutes into the film, I started to care less about the characters an began to wonder when this movie would end!

But then, mercifully...the war in Europe comes to life as Affleck volunteers to fly for the British Royal Air Force. Oh! But then, we get back to 'chick flick' stuff. You start to hope the Japanese remember to attack! If for no other reason than to kill off the cast! But, wait again...finally and brilliantly, the attack happens and this movie becomes awesome! In one stroke the director takes you through the romance of war, the lives of the people in the war and the terror and horror and ugliness of what happened and what happens in war. You are buoyed by bravery and dedication as naturally displayed by Cuba Gooding, Jr. (a phenomenal actor and as I commented before, an even more phenomenal person) and the selflessness of the people involved in war with their dedication.

The producers and Michael Bay seem to have been trying to make two different pictures and edit them together. I think they would both have made good movies, but this ended-up just a little long at parts, dragging out a fine motion picture more than they should have...but this is only my opinion and they are going to make a fortune off this film because it is, over-all, really good and something to see. Yes, the special effects are great, but the story telling, the foundation of any movie, is really good too. So I would recommend you go see this future epic. Oh, and I don't know how they did it exactly...but making Army officers the heroes of this naval epic was brilliant! Go Army!!!

"Planet of the Apes"
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter and Michael Clarke Duncan
[PG-13]

I don't know if I should write what I really think about this movie. ...and by that, what I mean is that sometimes you read a good review, or a great review and you expect too much from a movie, more than the actors, writers and producers can deliver. BUT...I have to, I must tell you that I think this is the best movie that I've seen this year! It's so good; it's pulling me out of this slump I've been in. I loved the way film, this (dare I say it?) remake of a movie I liked as a child is technically more proficient. All I can say is that these people did a great job from special effects to make-up to the writers and actors and the cinematography, the location...even the often times over-looked sound.

Mark Wahlberg the star of this film, well...he was okay in other films, but in 'Planet,' he has really earned his stripes (as we used to say in the Army). I was so impressed, hell, I am still in awe (and I never worked with him -or- as far as I know, anyone in this movie). All the actors, everything about this movie transports you there! If you like movies, you MUST go see this fun romp through time and space and possibilities. Somehow, they breathed new life into the old idea and came up with a fresh perspective giving the audience a new story and NOT disappointing the audience at all...with gorillas and chimps and orangutans that were more real, even more 'tangible' than what we saw in the original story.

I can't complain about my two 'favorite' gripes my friends, it's not 100% original, but it is fresh and, well, GREAT! The ending...well it's good, fresh, has a twist and if there's any gripe it has to be...that the story had to end. Yes, yes, yes...if you like my reviews and if you value my opinion - yes, go see 'Planet of the Apes,' buy a big popcorn and soda and have some fun!

"Prime"
Starring: Meryl Streep, Uma Thurman and who cares...
[PG-13]

Wow, did you ever expect to see a film starring Meryl Streep that totally and completely sucked? This is THAT movie! I wish I could say that she made the film worth watching, but if you are Jewish, I think you might be offended by the stereotypes, if you are Christian...you may find the joking asides to beliveing in Christ offensive, and if you are just a movie-goer, you'll be offended by spending your money and time watching this terrible movie.

The film (if you can call it that) starts off with a juvenile and undeveloped character you won't care about, even during his supposed growth. Meryl Streep seems pained in her acting,(she must have realized that this is her worst film ever).

Let's see...even with Uma Thurman's sexy body in this film...how do I put this? Umm, er, ah...please do NOT go see this boring, terribly written film? Yeah, that's it...do NOT waste your money my friends, I actually left the movie just before it ended because I was in pain. It's horrible.

"Red Planet"
Starring: Val Kilmer, Carrie-Anne Moss and Tom Sizemore
[PG-13]

I walked into the theater excited and expecting so much from this feature. I was a little disappointed. In the first twenty minutes, we learn that the planet Earth is really screwed-up and that Mars, seen as a promising new frontier has been altered by our scientists to allow for colonization...except something went wrong and this team is sent up to see why the best laid plans have...gone just a little wrong.

Their trip to Mars takes them about six months and sitting in the audience you start to feel like you have been cramped in that spaceship for six months! When they should make you care about the characters...they bore you and make you wish something would happen. The landing is interesting, even though Mars looks suspiciously like parts of Arizona. Technically a few things bother anyone proficient with computers, like current technology being compatible with something fifty years in the future...oh, and something from a failed Russian project as well. I mean hardware doesn't always work on every operating system or between let's say a Compaq, Dell or HP machine. Yet all the commercial patches (Toshiba, etc...) show that much like modern day racing, the space program will be 'sponsored' unless (dare I say it?) the patches were meant for us in the audience as some sort of product placement?

The best effect and/or performance of this picture was with a robot called 'Amee.' There are some other special effects worth looking at in this movie but I don't want to ruin the thin plot line and bad acting by telling you anything more, or like me, you might go in to the theater expecting too much and leave too disappointed.

"Scary Movie 2"
Starring: James Woods, Chris Elliott, Tim Curry and Anna Faris
[R]

There are times I have to blast some films because they attack the Church...and this film begins with some scenes that could be taken that way...yet, the Wayans are making a spoof that includes scenes from 'The Exorcist' and other classics. I had to laugh at Woods's caricature of the older priest in that [now] ancient film and most of the way through "Scary Movie 2."

There is a warning here though! Some of the scenes are juvenile, bathroom humor and I have to urge you NOT to get anything to eat...not to eat just before you see 'Scary Movie 2' and then to just laugh and chuckle as if you were still in high school...even if you're not. Good movie!

"Shadow of the Vampire"
Starring: John Malkovich , Willem Dafoe , Udo Kier , Catherine McCormack and Cary Elwes
[R]

Okay, something drew me into this picture, there wasn't much publicity and I almost saw it as a gag thinking it would be so bad, it might be good. Turns out 'Shadow' was so good it kept me interested and even got nominated for not one, but two Academy Awards!

The movie was interesting on more than one level, from the film making aspect to the roles played so very well, to the interesting background of the movie. This was no kiddie tale, it was no B-movie...I thouroughly recommend 'Shadow of the Vampire' to all of you out there who dare walk into a dark theater with an adventurous spirit!

"Signs"
Starring: Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Patricia Kalember, Cherry Jones, Rory Culkin and Abegale Breslin
[PG-13]

This movie starts off with overdramatic music and graphics leading into a slow paced beginning where I sat wondering more about the subplot than the film I was watching. I almost walked out, and as you know...this rarely happens. I mean crop circles? A non-denominational ex-priest type character who has lost his faith after his 'wife' is killed (wait, is he a priest? Confession? He left his church?), so many questions...Papapaplease (to steal a line from another movie). Yes, we all know this much about the movie before we walk in...but I expected SOMETHING to happen, and indeed, something does happen!

This isn't so much a movie about crop circles, it's not even so much a movie about aliens as it is a deeper movie about ourselves, frail, weak humans that we are. Sometimes I see a movie like "the Devil's Advocate" and I think: 'I could have written this...' And I feel that's a compliment, because I loved that movie. But, this movie was more than what I would have come up with, even in my creative little mind. This film is really, really good and the writer, producer and director tie up most loose ends really well.

'Signs' could have been diferent and it still would have been good. It could have gone in a hundred diferent directions and I think I would have still enjoyed it. But this was just askew of what most people would have done and in this case...they did a great job! When I got up, credits rolling, most people were still glued to their seats, stunned by a thought provoking work of art.

Oh, did I mention that YESSSSSSSSSSSSS, I would definitely recommend 'Signs' to my friends.

"Simone"
Starring: Al Pacino, Rachel Roberts and Jay Mohr
[PG-13]

Al Pacino is a name that will draw me into a film more than most other names I can think of, I mean his choices are usually great, his performances stellar?how can you miss? In this story about a sadly disillusioned producer who uses a computer-generated actress, I thought we had something interesting about virtual reality that would be interesting too. So, with all these expectations I sat in my chair nibbling on buttered popcorn, sipping on my Coke with no ice and found something un-great, un-stellar and sadly uninteresting as the story part of this movie missed almost every mark it should have hit.

While this movie could have had the star befriend or at least be interested in the technical aspects of producing a Simone, instead they opted to have Pacino?s character ?bothered? by the genius who discovered the secrets of making a virtual actress. Then, after he dies, the good techie ?leaves? a hard drive to Pacino?who, though he seems to know nothing about this ?science? drops the hard drive in like a CD and just ?magically? understand how to use this program and how to drop the actress in scenes?instantly!

I won?t give away the plot, though it is thin and about as uncreative as possible. If you go, if you pay and if you see this movie over the weekend and someone asks on Monday what you saw?don?t worry, mercifully, you?ll forget and answer with an ambivalent: ?I don?t know, saw something?? Though there are so many possibilities and this film has all the elements, I would not recommend it to my friends.

"Spy Kids"
Starring: Antonio Banderas and Carla Gigano
[PG]

I am personally terrible about taking my children to see 'kiddy films' with one of my lifetime regrets being that I didn't take my daughter Alexandra-Marie to see "Pee Wee's Circus" when she was a little girl. My son's seven year old voice has a lot in common with his big sister, so when he pleaded for me to take him to a kid's film this weekend...I broke down and took him to see 'Spy Kids.'

Yes, it's implausible and not very realistic...but 'Spy Kids' was indeed bearable for dad and little Jimmy was cracking-up and enjoying this movie the whole time! On my level, there were some cute moments and a lot to laugh at and enjoy...but the look on my little boy's face made this film a high 9+ on a scale of one to ten (ten being highest). Robert Rodriguez and everyone involved said they wanted to make a film for children, and they suceeded. James E. F. Riley, Jr. wants to see this film again, so I am sure he would recommend this to his friends, fellow students and yes...their parents.

After you read this...don't carry regrets around forever? Take your young child to see a funny and entertaining picture. I recommend 'Spy Kids' to parents! : )

"Star Wars Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith"
Starring: Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Hayden Christensen, Ian McDiarmid, Samuel L. Jackson, Jimmy Smits, Frank Oz, Anthony Daniels and Christopher Lee
[PG-13]

Darth Vader, the voice...it's, it's, it's NOT the voice of CNN! For some reason, I am still shocked by that! I thought for so long that it was James Earl Jones, somehow I feel that's the biggest thing in this movie. But, it's not.

Batten down the hatches and yes, take your kids! This is an incredible orgy of special effects and tying-up a lot of the loose ends. It's at the very least a visual feast and yes, story telling with heroes who aren't unsympathetic, even though you know they are going the wrong way and destroying themselves as much as they are hurting anyone else..

I loved it when I was a kid, I liked it as an adult and I loved the look on my little boys face while we shared this experience. I really recommend this movie for you and your kids. You'll walk out remembering the first episode, because the movie ends just about where episode one began! If you haven't seen it yet, shame on you.

"Stealth"
Starring: Josh Lucas, Jessica Biel, Jamie Foxx, Joe Morton and Richard Roxburgh
[PG-13]

Navy pilots are reputed to be the best pilots in the world, probably with egos to match. Yet, in the character development, as the picture starts?you get to like these military officers and yet, the beginnings of the story are a little predictable with action through there training and testing and introduction to a mischievous, robotic pilot. Things are even predictable when the lead pilot pulls a George S. Patton style move, shutting down his radio to carry out a dangerous move that risks his life!

But, then the machine ?learns? and starts to misbehave. The action gets more intense?and guess what? The predictability starts to disappear. Jamie Foxx is terrific, as is the whole cast in a movie that takes you into the Middle-East, Europe and Asia. The action keeps going and the characters develop with even a villain as the story unfolds.

This isn?t an okay movie to kill a little time, it?s a movie to make time to see. Is it a guy movie as opposed to a ?chick-flick?? Yeah, I mean it?s got all the elements, military, bombs, missiles and bullets. Is it something a ?chick might still want to go with her boyfriend or husband to see? Yeah, it?s more complicated than, let?s say a Van Damn (is he still around?) movie. Two thumbs up?really, this is a really good movie to watch and enjoy!

"Swordfish"
Starring: John Travolta, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and Don Cheandle
[R]

BOOM! What an exciting and explosive beginning! Boom! John Travolta is an excellent Machiavellian, end-justifying-the-means crazy kind of bad guy and guide through this explosive and exciting story, Halle Berry is incredibly sexy and poor Hugh Jackman's character gets stuck between them! Boom! The plot and story and everything are GREAT!

The only qualm or problem at all with this film comes after so much great fim making, at the end...and maybe I'm just being too picky. If the end was scripted more carefully, if just a little more thought were given or more of an explaination...well, this would be even more of a rave review.

Recommended? Yes, this is definitely a 'go see' film!

"Syriana"
Starring: Kayvan Novak, George Clooney, Amr Waked and Christopher Plummer
[R]

A Sort-of a docu-drama that I think is too long and misses it’s mark in what it tried to be. I don’t think you’ll learn much by watching this movie, but George Clooney’s portrayal is interesting and the twists and turns combined with current events makes it an interesting film.

Just like I mentioned, it’s a little long…and not the ‘documentary’ it seems to want to be, and in the end we know we’re getting screwed by the government and our ‘friends’ in power in the Middle East, so there’s no surprise either.

Would I recommend you see this movie? Yes, but maybe when it comes out on DvD rather than shelling out seven bucks or more per person.

"The 6th Day"
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Robert Duvall
[PG-13]

Maybe it was because I had my first cup of coffee in about twenty years, but the first half of this movie about the near future and scientific cloning of the human beast seemed to just drag on...trying to make you care about people and failing miserably! The writers obviously didn't worry about character development. The plot itself, timely, interesting and promising was lacking and disappointing.

Adding to this a very dull 'mad' scientist (Duvall) and dull mastermind and inept crew of bad guys makes it hard to recommend this as an 'action' movie. Yet once this film gets going (in the second half) it's full of action and great special effects and a great plot twist! Maybe the best solution would be to get to the theater late, wait in the lobby and watch the people, then walk in and enjoy the second half of 'The 6th Day.'

"The Animal"
Starring: Rob Schneider and Colleen Haskell
[PG-13]

An unusual subject matter, a dash of 'The Six Million Dollar Man' and some interesting cast... this is one of those movies that leave you wondering, was it good or was it mediocre? Okay, I have to vote for 'mediocre +.' If you've seen everything else, if you have to go see 'something,' then I would say that you could go see 'The Animal' and not feel bad about it, because it's one of those films that will indeed make you laugh. I think Hollywood in general and Schneider specifically could do better though.

"The Chronicles of Narnia"
Starring: Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, William Moseley and Anna Pepperell
[PG]

A little girl travels through a wooden closet/wardrobe to the mystical land of Narnia devoid of time and reality. She is then followed by her siblings and, together, they learn of the eternal struggle between good and evil and their destiny to free this land by fighting for right with the help of a benevolent lion with magical powers and wisdom.

The press for this picture, through churches, television and the public relations of the studio suggest that the lion in a messiah and there are some similarities. The story is good family viewing and my kids, ages 6 and 12 seemed to get a kick out of the movie and characters.

If you are looking for a movie to take the kids to, this film is a good choice. Even for the adults, the special effects and creatures are pretty amazing…

"The Family Man"
Starring: Nicolas Cage and Tea Leoni
[PG-13]

I had a friend in Los Angeles, my best friend...and when talking about my stories and the kinds of movies I might make some day, well, we used to talk about a man named Frank Capra. He made movies like 'Mr. Smith Goes To Washington' and (my favorite) "It's A Wonderful Life." 'The Family Man' is not a Capra film, but it does supply you with some of the same feelings and I think Mr. Capra is smiling that his 'feel good moments' are still around and that this film makes people remember his stories so well.

Much like "It's A Wonderful Life" this film takes a man out of his normal settings, though in this case...an angelic type who seems to be in trouble takes our 'hero' for the ride of his life. Cage is wonderful and deals with his 'new' family and all that goes with it just like anyone might...kicking and screaming all the way, until he discovers what is really important...but his fate is sealed and his life, well...can't tell you any more, that would ruin what I think would be a good night out! Hollywood should take note, this is a really great movie to take someone to.

"The Forsaken"
Starring: Brendan Fehr, Kerr Smith and Johnathon Schaech
[R]

I'm not sure if the title refers to the people in the film, or the people in the audience. While I sat through this vampire story with no depth, no plot or character development and no meaningful story, I actually saw four people get up and walk out! If you are looking at these 'stars' and wonder who they are...they are THE forsaken.

"The Legend of Zorro"
Starring: Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Rufus Sewell, Nick Chinlund, and Julio Oscar Mechoso
[PG]

We join our hero, later in life...with a son, though I think in the first instalment of this story, we left him...having a daughter, no?

Political intrigue is rife with Californians, under the most Hispanic 'Riley' I have seen until my own children were born (their mom is from Mexico City). Banderas is charming and funny and well choreographed as before, Senora Zorro (Zeta-Jones) is beautiful and beguiling as always...

But, the story, in trying to be cute or politically correct and give Mrs Zorro more depth, makes their marriage fall apart, makes Zeta-Jones take on an 'assignment' by ruthless Pinkerton agents and lose her image as a loyal and good Spanish wife...almost to the point of being a...dare I say it? To the point of being like a whore for hire to get the villian's "secrets." Which, I suppose can be noble but became just another distraction.

There are moments, there are smiles and it's an okay movie....best suited for when it comes out on video than paying out big bucks in a theater.

"The Master of Disguise"
Starring: Dana Carvey
[PG]

I was almost insulted by the way this film portrays Italian-Americans. On many levels, I was insulted that they took my money to see a movie like this. Stunned, I sat in the darkened theater waiting for something truly funny, something of the level that I knew Dana Carvey was capable...

There were some moments, a couple maybe a few...but this spoof falls short of what was expected and hoped for.

I would like to say that towards the end of this movie I felt entertained and can say so...only with the weakest enthusiasm. Maybe for die-hard fans of Saturday Night Live, m a y b e it might be worth viewing on video or DVD. But, movie tickets, popcorn and soda are too expensive to watch something this lackluster.

"The Mexican"
Starring: Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts
[R]

This is one of those sleepers in a way, well, at least to me. I didn't plan on seeing 'The Mexican' but stumbled into the darkened theater and I was really surprised at a movie that tells an interesting, complicated story with a very humorous outlook on a desperate, neurotic couple and their misadventures. There were good plot twists and turns with no-one being what they appear (well, except for the main characters).

Brad Pitt takes you on a great adventure through this story with Julia Roberts being a nice distraction from time to time and only adding to the plot. The director should be proud of the brew he concocted, much like a chef who slaves over the ingredients that the writer and actors provided until he serves a hungry audience something fresh and unique! The timing and pace reminds me just slightly of 'Pulp Fiction.'

Yes, this is a whole hearted recommendation. This was a good movie, not great, not perfect...but a good investment for your entertainment dollar!

"The Mummy Returns"
Starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, Patricia Velasquez, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Oded Fehr & The Rock [PG]

Before I start, let me begin with the proviso that YES, I liked this movie. That said, I was also disappointed because as usually happens, the sequel did not live up to the first movie 'The Mummy.' This story about the mummies (always the bad guys) versus the good guys featuring 'The Rock' of wrestling fame (very small role) was a little less amazing in the special effects department than I expected (based on the gee wiz factor of the first 'Mummy') and a little more cartoonish. The plot wasn't as rich, the characters weren't as developed and at best (yawn, I have to mention this again...), the special effects were just okay.

Yet I love myth and archeology and history...and so I still found 'The Mummy Returns' entertaining. Mostly, this is a good family film (like I said, more cartoon-ish making it great for kids - unless you don't want them to see violence). I took my seven-and-a-half year old son, Jimmy to this and he loved it, telling me that he thought it was better and more fun than the first!

"The Ringer"
Starring: Mohammad Ahmed, Geoffrey Arend, Edward Barbanell
[PG-13]

I am shallow enough, that sometimes seeing a developmentally challenged person makes me uncomfortable. That doesn’t speak well for me at all, and it’s something I feel I should work on. Seeing a movie that seemed to poke fun at these people seemed the wrong direction to go…but I bought my ticket and walked in and was surprised at this project.

This film faces a lot of challenges on the own, I mean could it really be funny? How would they ‘handle’ the concept of some guy in financial trouble trying to take advantage of the disadvantaged? Answer: It’s funny, entertaining and in it’s own way, charming. The ‘handling?’ Wow, it made me comfortable but also showed these competitors to be personable and even ‘cool.’

Will this be a propaganda piece for the disadvantaged? No. But, do I recommend this as something to go see and have fun with? YES!

"The Score"
Starring: Robert De Niro, Edward Norton, Angela Bassett and Marlon Brando
[R]

De Niro is always good, isn't he? But Edward Norton, well...he makes you sit back and amazes the audience with the depth he pours into his character. This actor is something else!

Robert De Niro plays an old time, good guy...wants to retire and become legit thief. Immediately, you know he's a professional and that he doesn't want to hurt anyone. He has a jazz club and Angela Bassett is his fly in, fly out (stewardess) girlfriend with whom he'd like to settle down. Marlon Brando is an 'arranger' of sorts who tugs and pulls, tempts and teases De Niro into this deal with a character we're not sure how to feel about, Norton.

I don't tell you about most films like this...because the stories aren't this well developed and I'd give everything away. Yet, I can do this here...because there's really a story, not just an idea or thought. But, that's just the first few minutes...then there's the planning, execution and twists and turns to make 'The Score' fun to watch.

Interesting, well acted...just just consuming. Yes, this is a film to go see...by yourself, or with a friend and/or a date! Go see this work, it's really good.

"The Tailor of Panama"
Starring: Pierce Brosnan and Jamie Lee Curtis
[R]

This story begins in England with a kind-of James Bond-ish Brosnan being sent down to Panama as a style of exile for a rogue agent who had a fling with the wrong person in the wrong place at the wrong time... and worse yet, being caught and blowing his cover. Disgraced and dishonored, his character is bent on what at first seems regaining his prestige but evolves into a retirement plan of his own, or revenge or maybe setting things right while gaining a profit? Well...if nothing else, it's a complicated plot!

Geoffrey Rush is brilliant in his role as a tailor sewing his stories for excitement while recalling the glory or folly of renegades trying to fight former dictator Manuel Noriega. You see how this could happen, you watch as the plot thickens and he digs a hole for himself, his family and friends...maybe even his adopted country as American forces (based on his stories) get ready to retake the Panama Canal!

Jamie Lee Curtis is so good, the story so deep and interesting that you might even miss her brief frontal nudity. It's very brief and the story is so good, you just aren't looking for or thinking about it. Her portrayal of the American wife of the British tailor isn't at all on the sideline... she is very much a part of this movie and just helps make it better and better!

Made in Ireland and Panama...the cinematography is excellent and this film is pleasantly stylish, interesting and smart. I definitely recommend 'The Tailor of Panama.'

"Thirteen Days"
Starring: Kevin Costner, Bruce Greenwood and Steven Culp
[PG-13]

Here we have a docu-drama that attempts to take you the viewer into the inner-circle of the Kennedy Administration during the two-week Cuban missile crisis in October of 1962. Some people in the audience weren't born yet and in some ways, it may even seem like ancient history to them. I was almost five years old, yet to me, it was more tangible, more real. Knowing what we know now made it even more relevant, not less and I think a fair job was done in this recreation of the discussions and the serious events of that time.

"Tomb Raider"
Starring: Angelina Jolie, Iain Glen and Daniel Craig
[PG-13]

Wow, we have so much promise here...the secretive Illuminati plotting to take over the world, an ancient artifact, the beautiful Laura Croft chasing after them and destroying their evil plot to save the world!

So much promise by the exciting coming attractions and the game upon which this movie is loosely based. Okay, there is something to the story, but no depth, no secrets revealed, nothing is really learned about the Illuminati. The artifact? *yawn* There are some great special effects...but a good movie needs more....I almost can't believe that I am saying this, but even the beauty and sexiness of Jolie is not enough to carry this film! She's fun to watch, but please, Please, PLEASE give me a story, something interesting?

If you are seven, if you have a seven year old boy to take to this film, yes...go, if you're older, if you don't have a seven year old boy...I can not recommend this film that seemed to have had so much to offer.

"Traffic"
Starring: Michael Douglas, Dennis Quaid and Catherine Zeta-Jones (Douglas)
[R]

This modern day, intense docu-drama rips you out of that middle class theater and throws you violently in to the epicenter that is the world of drug trafficking. Michael Douglas plays the perfect candidate for a conservative drug czar who is unaware of what is going on with his own daughter and family, blinded by naﶥt駠and political ambition. His wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones twirls you around her little finger as an unknowing wife, another victim of the drug war...only to bring her surprising transition to an ambitious woman in her own right. I don't even pretend to know the name of the actress who played Douglas' daughter, but she too is seductive in her multi-dimensional role as a daughter, student, cynic and addict. All three of these professionals make this film something beyond its hype, something so realistic and well done that you walk out of the theater feeling as if you really 'experienced' more than just 'saw' this film.

In a word, 'Traffic' is 'intense.' I would recommend seeing this in a theater though; I think part of the experience is how it floods your senses and pounds its theme deep within your brain. I just don't think you'll get the full effect on cable or from a video/dvd. This is a well crafted film.

"Unbreakable"
Starring: Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson
[PG-13]

Bruce Willis, a horrific train wreck, a mysterious secret about WHY this man survives, Samuel L. Jackson speaking in hushed whispers...the coming attractions for this film were, in a word: GREAT! Yet to me, the director of 'The Sixth Sense' (M. Night Shyamalan) has delivered a painfully slow moving picture that maybe had enough material for about an hour, only to be stretched into a 117 minute ordeal!

A baby is born that we don't know anything about except that he won't stop crying (something movie goers are sure to love, just in-case no-one brings a real baby to the theater) and has broken arms and legs from the beginning. Bruce Willis does survive an accident we don't see. Samuel L. Jackson is the baby grown up with some unnatural fascination with comic books. ...And the movie plods along with unnecessary scenes that serve no purpose other than to stretch this story out and fill time. I expected so much more and I would not and do not recommend this movie to anyone with a pulse.

"War of the Worlds"
Starring: Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Tim Robbins, Miranda Otto and Justin Chatwin
[PG-13]

So, the critics and media have sort-of panned the movie because of Tom Cruise's, um, ahhh, er, ah...well, what they call 'weird behavior.' As you know, I met Tom Cruise and worked on the movie, 'Jerry Maguire.' Doesn't mean I 'know' him, but he seems like an alright guy to me and a talented actor to millions. He's entitled to his opinion, much as Jane Fonda, Shirley Maclain, and/or every other person who calls themselves an American. I'm a Roman Catholic and do not agree with Scientology...but, I do agree that this was a fun movie for me, my family and especially my son Jimmy.

Parmount, Dream Works and Steven Spielberg (who I also worked for in the movie 'Lost World') teamed up with Cruise for a movie that is visually and audibly stunning and terrific as, according to their synopsis: 'the world goes to war[!}' in a modern version of H. G. Wells' story of the battle for our future on this planet.

I try never to give away the story...so it's hard to say much more, except that yes, this movie is a feast of special effects and fun for the whole family. Wow!

"Wedding Crashers"
Starring: Owen Wilson, Vance Vaughn, Christopher Walken, Rachel McAdams Isla Fisher and Jane Seymore
[R]

Okay, the movie starts off, very sexy and hot! This is not something to bring the kids to as two men (Owen and Vance), help mediate a divorce settlement and then proceed to crash weddings and bed dozens of incredibly attractive young women.

I went to see this on my own, by myself, and this would have been okay, just as it was. I am after all, an immature guy and only wished those brief peeks had lasted longer. But then, crashing the ultimate, 'power' wedding, with Cristopher Walken as the powerful father of the bride (and two good looking daughters), the comedy really starts.

This could have become something too sappy, too sweet, too much of a moral play, but instead, takes off with one of the daughters, Isla Fisher stealing the show as a somewhat wholesome, possessive nymphomaniac. Sounds a little weird, but literally the whole theater was laughing out loud throughout the movie.

If you are stressed-out and just need a little comic relief, this is the perfect movie to go see. I laughed, I enjoyed it...and this was an extremely hard week, a rough day, but ended-up blessed with a few laughs. I recommend this movie, highly, but remember, no kids!

"What's The Worst That Could Happen?"
Starring: Martin Lawrence and Danny Devito
[PG-13]

I have worked with Martin Lawrence (although he probably doesn't know me, remember, I was just an extra). And, I have met Danny Devito at CAA when I was signing a contract with them to read my material many years ago. Martin seemed nice enough and Danny is incredibly nice (he talked to me as an equal in this high powered agency, really friendly). So, I want to say that "What's the worst..." is a great film...I want to, but I can't. It's mediocre at best and would have made a good hour long episode on TV, but it just doesn't cut it as anything I could recommend to you.

This story about a thief who meets and competes with a corporate mogul (sort-of another thief) and their personal rivalry has a few good moments and both actors are indeed likeable, but it falls flat, especially at the end. If you really are a big fan of either or both, wait for this movie to come out on video or cable or even regular TV.
